Tell G4S to ‘come and see the prisons with their eyes’: Imprisoned without trial for being a member of a political party

Last week a day of action was held in solidarity with Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails. This interview is part of a series of Corporate Watch articles investigating the Israeli prison system.

Suleiman Majid* is a member of the Hamas party in his early forties. Corporate Watch met with him, and with Talib Hasan* who was imprisoned during the same period, in a town in the Northern West Bank to discuss their imprisonment by the Israel state. We discussed the involvement of international companies in providing services to Israeli prisons, particularly G4S. Continue reading

A sign in the fields of the illegal settlement of Kalia in the Israeli occupied Jordan Valley for ‘organic goods’ grown by Hayun Yitzhak – taken by Corporate Watch researchers on 26/01/2013

Corporate Watch visited the fields of the illegal settlement of Kalia, a settlement kibbutz on the coast of the Dead Sea, on the 26th January 2013.

Carmel-Agrexco was Israel’s main agricultural export company, exporting 70% of all fresh produce from Israel’s illegal settlements, until September 2011 when it was formally liquidated, partly due to pressure from the global Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement. Formerly state owned, Agrexco has been privately purchased by Bickel Flowers and, according to Who Profits?, has regained a significant proportion of its former market.

A packing house bearing Agrexco signage, which was packaging goods for Agrexco’s ECOFRESH brand in 2010, was operating nearby but was packaging goods for export by other agricultural companies instead of Agrexco, indicating that Agrexco has lost some of its market in this region.

Crops were labelled as being grown for export by Carmel Agrexco. One sign read “Organic FC [Field Crops], Hayun Yitzhak”. Continue reading

Research in Palestine – 2013

The Corporate Occupation research team returned from Palestine in late February 2013. We gathered a large amount of new information which we will be disseminating over the coming months. This information will initially be in the form of photos, videos, articles and short reports. Later on we will compile some of it into longer reports and factsheets.

You can also follow us on Twitter at @CorpOccupation

Our research is intended to serve as a resource for the international movement for Boycott Divestment and Sanctions against Israeli apartheid, colonisation and occupation. Please contact us if you can think of any info that might be useful to your campaign. We are happy to come and speak to campaigners in workshops or public meetings too.

Volvo and JCB machinery used in construction of the JICA industrial zone

volvomishor

We were asked today whether we’d seen any Volvo equipment being used in the West Bank. These machines, including a Volvo truck were seen at the construction site for the JICA joint Palestinian authority/Israeli government industrial zone in the Jordan Valley (between Jericho and the Allenby Bridge). There is also a JCB machine in the shot.

Israeli Company seeking to stop protest in the UK

The CEO of Soda Club, an Israeli company with a production facility in the settlement industrial zone of Mishor Adumim, has vowed to stop the protests happening outside its UK shop.

Daniel Birnbaum told local paper The Argus today that the firm will take legal action to clear the protesters from in front of their store.

Ecostream, Soda Club’s store in Brighton has faced biweekly pickets outside its shop in Western Road by supporters of the Palestinian call for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against companies complicit in Israeli apartheid, occupation and militarism. These are accompanied by smaller counter demonstrations by a coalition of Zionists and Christian Zionists handing out material from the British Israel Communications and Research Centre (BICOM) and the US based  ’We Stand With Israel’. BDS Successes against Corporations: A response to Anshel Pfeffer

On February 22nd Anshel Pfeffer, writing about Corporate Watch’s recent book Targeting Israeli Apartheid in Ha’aretz, claimed that “while the movement has managed to mobilize thousands of supporters around the world to send online entreaties that convince performers, many of whom see themselves as human-rights activists, to avoid Israel, the corporations and some of the more famous performers who are less exposed to Facebook campaigns, have been impervious.” We feel that this is gross misjudgement of the BDS movement.

To say that the BDS movement has been confined to online activism is to ignore the hundreds of thousands who demonstrated in European cities during the massacre in Gaza and the great many acts of direct action against companies profiting from Israeli apartheid, militarism and occupation. To give just one example, during the 2009 attack on Gaza six British activists broke into the EDO/ITT weapons factory (now a part of ITT Exelys) and caused $300,000 worth of damage, disabling the production line and preventing the manufacture of weapons components bound for Israel. In 2010 a British jury found the activists not guilty on the basis that they had acted to prevent war crimes. Continue reading
